Dominick VANDERLIP
“11th PLACE”

“Untitled (Atomic bomb)”
62” X 48”
Oil, spray paint, and various markers on canvas.

This collection marks Vanderlip's first solo exhibition featuring his wryly confessional"self-portrait" dog paintings,  meditative floral paintings and sculptural multimedia collages, alongside a series of hand-coiled jars and mugs, fired in a wood kiln he built himself.  In total this exhibition showcases a comprehensive view of his diverse artistic practice.

Drawing from his family's dual heritage in both wilderness stewardship and fine arts, Vanderlip creates with an intensity that mirrors a primal survival instinct. His work articulates an internal rebellion while simultaneously surrendering to the tranquil rhythm of repetition and the authenticity of natural materials. At the intersection of urban environments and untamed nature, his materials and imagery collide.  Vanderlip’s paintings are both playfully rebellious and meditative while his ceramic vessels, jars and mugs, are both rough and refined. These contradictions present a visual diary of an artist unafraid to push and reveal the beautiful complexity of his inner working. He works to regenerate, recharge, and often to just stay on track.

Vanderlip's attraction to clay emerges from the delicate balance between surrendering to the medium's unpredictable transformation in the firing process and the decisiveness of his own artistic assertion while creating objects of both utility and beauty. His ceramics embody the tension between controlled craftsmanship and natural alchemy.
